Beppu Onsen

One of the most famous hot spring resort towns in Japan, Beppu has 8 different natural springs feeding the many ryokan and public baths in the town and together they produce more onsen water than any other resort in the country. Views of the town from the surrounding mountains show steam rising thickly into the air from various places, illustrating the natural resource of the area.

Beppu offers not only an abundance of hot water baths but also several other types, such as hot sand baths, steam baths and hot mud baths, each of which is said to have its own therapeutic or cosmetic benefits.

Beppu is also famed for its thermal pools known as the Hells – far to hot to bathe in, but a popular tourist attraction nonetheless.
