More commonly known as soccer in Japan, football is becoming increasingly popular. In 1993, the Japan Professional Football League was formed, and this league’s high standards attracted huge numbers of spectators and led to a huge increase in the sport’s popularity. The J League is currently the most successful association football league in Asia.
Women’s football in Japan is of a particularly high standard, with a win at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup and a runner-up position in the 2015 competition in Canada.
