Nagasaki

The largest city in the prefecture, Nagasaki is sadly synonymous with the atomic bomb, being the second target of nuclear warfare by the United States in World War II. Visiting the tranquil Nagasaki Peace Park and imaginatively designed Atomic Bomb Museum, is a thought-provoking experience. Situated on the western coast of Kyushu, Nagasaki also played a prominent role in foreign trade relations throughout history, being one of the few ports open to foreign traders during Japan’s isolation period. As a result, the mixture of East and West can be seen in various parts of the city’s food culture. You can enjoy castella, a type of sponge cake introduced by 16th century Portugese missionaries, or chanpon noodles of Chinese origin.
