Morioka is the capital of Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan’s Tohoku region. Located around two hours from Tokyo by shinkansen, the city is set between the Kitakami, Nakatsu and Shizukuishi rivers, with views of Mount Iwate rising to the west. Morioka is known for its manageable size, relaxed atmosphere and strong connection to regional culture.
The city has a long history dating back to the Edo period and is home to landmarks such as the ruins of Morioka Castle and preserved historic districts. Morioka is also recognised for its food culture, particularly dishes such as wanko soba, reimen noodles and jajamen. Traditional crafts, small independent businesses and seasonal festivals contribute to the city’s local character.
Often used as a gateway to the wider Tohoku region, Morioka provides convenient access to surrounding hot springs, rural landscapes and coastal areas, making it a practical base for exploring northern Japan.
