Gifu Prefecture

A landlocked Prefecture in central Japan, Gifu borders Aichi, Mie, Shiga, Fukui, Ishikawa, Nagano & Toyama Prefectures.

Historically, its central location has afforded the prefecture great significance, and gave rise to the saying “Control Gifu and you control Japan.”

The Prefectural capital, Gifu City, is home to Japan’s most famous cormorant fishing and further north, the city of Takayama and the Shirakawago district are very popular sightseeing locations for both foreign and domestic tourists.
