Matsumoto Castle

Matsumoto Castle is one of Japan’s few original castles standing, and is, very justifiably, one of only four listed as national treasures. Of these, it is the second oldest.

Known as the “Crow Castle” due to its unusual black colour, Matsumoto Castle was built during the late 16th century. The internal gun museum and an extensive folk-lore museum are included in the 600 yen entry fee. English speaking volunteer guides are sometimes available, and well worth asking for at the entrance.

With its striking appearance and photogenic nature, it’s no surprise that Matsumoto Castle is one of Japan’s most popular castles to visit. Talk to us about including it in your trip to Japan!
