Shiga

Shiga Prefecture, located in the Kansai region of Japan, is known for its historical significance and scenic beauty. It lies in central Honshu, bordered by Kyoto to the west, Fukui to the north, Gifu to the east, and Mie to the south. The capital city of Shiga is Otsu.

Notable historical sites include Hikone Castle, an Edo-period structure in Hikone City and a national treasure of Japan. Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a significant Tendai Buddhist monastery with a history spanning over 1,200 years. Ishiyama-dera Temple is another cultural landmark, famous for being where Murasaki Shikibu is said to have begun writing “The Tale of Genji.”

Lake Biwa, the largest freshwater lake in Japan, is a central feature of Shiga. The lake covers an area of approximately 670 square kilometers and has a shoreline of about 235 kilometers. It is one of the world’s oldest lakes, estimated to be over 4 million years old. Lake Biwa is a vital water source for the Kansai region and supports a rich biodiversity, including many endemic species. The lake is also a popular destination for recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming.
