Shuri Castle
Originally built in the late 1300s, Shuri Castle was the palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom and played an integral role in the political unification of Okinawa Hontou.
Although it was destroyed in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, the reconstructions are beautifully done and convey a sense of the glory of days gone by. The combination of Chinese and Japanese influences illustrate the trading history of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
The castle is within easy walking distance of Shuri Station on the Okinawa Monorail and is usually open between 8.30am and 7pm (closing time depends upon the season).
