Yufuin Onsen

The small hot spring resort of Yufuin is not far from Beppu, a much larger resort town. Yufuin has many galleries, boutiques and charming cafes and is popular both as a day trip destination and as a place to stay.

Many of the hot springs are open to non-staying guests and we recommend trying out as many as you can but for the quintessential old style hot springs experience, we recommend heading to the Shitanyu, a very simple, old-fashioned public bath house at the shore of Lake Kinrinko. It has two small pools and is gender mixed without dedicated changing rooms and has limited facilities but plenty of old world charm.
