Shikoku

Shikoku is Japan’s smallest main island, offering a quieter and more immersive alternative to the country’s better-known destinations. Made up of Kagawa, Tokushima, Ehime and Kochi prefectures, the region is known for its diverse landscapes, rich cultural traditions and slower pace of life. The island is perhaps best known for the 88 Temple Pilgrimage, a centuries-old route that circles Shikoku and remains an important part of the region’s identity.

Visitors can explore the historic streets of Matsuyama, home to the renowned Dogo Onsen, one of Japan’s oldest hot springs. In Kagawa, the beautifully landscaped Ritsurin Garden sits alongside a celebrated culinary culture centred around Sanuki udon. Tokushima is famous for the dramatic Iya Valley, where vine bridges span deep mountain gorges, as well as the energetic Awa Odori festival. Kochi offers a rugged Pacific coastline, clear rivers and one of Japan’s best-preserved original castles.
