Step into a world where tradition meets refined luxury at The Omoya, a meticulously restored 260-year-old kominka farmhouse nestled in the tranquil valley of Togari, Iiyama, in rural Nagano. Surrounded by serene landscapes, this exquisite farmhouse offers a seamless blend of historical charm and contemporary comfort.
The Omoya features two sumptuous ensuite bedrooms and an additional connecting room; ideal for families or groups seeking both intimacy and space. Unwind in the onsen-style bathroom, where a grand hinoki bath opens to a peaceful Japanese garden, creating a spa-like sanctuary within your private retreat.
The expansive living and dining area invites relaxation and conviviality, anchored by a professional-grade kitchen suited for gourmet meals. For a more traditional ambiance, step into the washitsu Japanese style room, where soft light filters through shoji screens and a classic irori hearth sets the stage for quiet reflection or intimate gatherings.
Just a short stroll from the nearby ski lift, The Omoya offers the best of both worlds – a serene countryside escape with effortless access to mountain adventure.
The Omoya can be booked together with our adjacent property The Kura, creating the perfect base for exploring the area’s many charms.
Activities
Alongside developing The Omoya itself, we have worked with the local people to set up and curate a range of activities for our clients to enjoy while staying in Togari. Some of these are full, or half days out, such as hiking sections of the stunning Shin-Etsu Trail, visiting the Snow Monkeys in Yudanaka or even hiking with an ascetic Yamabushi monk to his remote shrine in the mountains. Other activities on offer include hand fishing for char in the crystal clear river streams, searching for stag beetles or even helping with the rice planting or harvesting. There’s something going on throughout the year!
If you prefer more active pursuits, in addition to skiing or snowboarding, in winter you can also try fatbiking, which in Japan, currrently is unique to Togari. At other times of the year, rafting, kayaking, holistic outdoor yoga sessions and a host of other options are available.
For anyone interested in the local architecture, we also offer a tour of the local minka . These are traditional, rural Japanese houses, seen in much of Japan. While many of these historic buildings have been left abandoned, some have been carefully restored and found new life as modern homes that retain all their ancient charm.
