Iwatayama Monkey Park is a smallish wildlife park in Arashiyama. It is home to a troop of over 170 wild Japanese macaque monkeys.
To get to the park, there’s a hike of about 20 minutes or so up the mountain. The monkeys roam freely around the area and will happily mingle with their human visitors while relaxing and waiting for their next meal. The monkeys are fed at 10:30, 12:30 and 2:30 every day and their feeding time is fun to watch as the monkeys all quickly appear and follow their keeper in pied piper fashion.
If you don’t have a chance to visit the snow monkeys in Yudanaka, this park offers a good opportunity to learn more about Japanese macaques.
The park is open every day from 9am to 5pm.
